Slow Travel and Local Travel

Planeta.com has long touted the motto 'think smart, travel slow' as a means of making the most of engaging, experiential tourism. Slow travel allows visitors to enjoy more than the adrenaline kick of racing through a foreign landscape. Slow travel encourages person-to-person contact and a deeper appreciation of people and place. It allows experiences that can be enjoyed rather than running from one destination to another without savoring the journey. If you are seeking experiential tourism, use common sense ... heck, use all of your senses.

Tarjetas Postales
Viva slow travel! In an age of email and twitter, postcards are a terrific souvenir of a trip and a reminder of people and places worth remembering.

To raise awareness of the extensive cultural and biological diversity in Oaxaca, Mexico, Ron Mader has created a series of eight postcards with local graphics design company Despacharte. Each postcard includes Ron's original photo, a bilingual English-Spanish caption and a classic Mexican proverb.

Technical question

Does anyone sell biodegradable bags, around 11cm x 21cm in size?

Working Notes

November 12 - Día del Cartero (Post Office Worker's Day)

March 2010 - Amate Books have re-stocked!

September 2009 - The postcards are for sale at Casa Arnel

August 2009 - Packaging the postcards for sale at future events.

July 2009 - The postcards are for sale from the Mendoza Family on Alcala Street during Guelaguetza. Photo

March 2009 - I have found resealable plastic bags that can be used to sell packages of the postcards. Now if I can find the bags in biodegradable plastic!

September 2008 - The cards are now available at Hotel Las Bugambilias.

July 2008 - The cards are out. Despacharte did a great job with printing ... Handing out a choice of cards at the Sanchez Pascuas Market, venders chose the Guadalaupe postcard about 80% of the time ... The only criticisms of the cards are that the descriptions could be longer on a few of the cards ... Also, the cards do not identify the photographer (Ron Mader). Oops! ... Looking for good ways to display the cards. Working with artisans to prepare some ceramic and pine needle displays ... The postcards will be sent to sponsors of Oaxaca Amigos.

Social Web

All of the photos chosen for the postcard series are already visible on Flickr, one of the web's premiere photography websites. Ron Mader's photos have been viewed more than 500,000 times.

One of the inspirations for the Oaxaca postcard series are notecards featuring the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, photographed by Tom Walter. Manaki Whenua, Manaki Tangata, Haere whakamua (Care for the land. Care for people. Go forward) is one of the best examples of inspired travel photography and a great introduction to the country of New Zealand.
